info
I teach a wide variety of courses in U. S. history, military history, and the history of technology for the University of Memphis, both in the classroom and online. I launched and direct the History Department's online program in 2008, and it remains one of the few online undergraduate history program offered by a major university (and one of the largest online programs at the University of Memphis). In 2011, we added graduate courses and the MA degree to our online offerings. Since stepping down as the director of the online program, I've served as Associate Department Chair, Interim Chair of Graduate Studies, and Interim Department Chair.
My recent publications include Military Strategy for Writers (2023), Teaching and Learning History Online (Routledge 2023), Sadomasochism and the BDSM Community in the United States (2021), The Sea in World History (2017), From Torpedoes to Aviation: Washington Irving Chambers and Technological Innovation in the New Navy, 1877-1913 (2007), “The Greely Relief Expedition and the New Navy,” International Journal of Naval History 5 (December 2006), which won the Rear Admiral Ernest M. Eller Prize in Naval History, and many others.
